Thanks to a generous grant from the Swayne Family Foundation, Hawaii Habitat for Humanity has designed and developed an organic Local Food Production Pilot Program. Home Gardening Kits will be provided to 21 Habitat Partner Families throughout the seven home building Habitat affiliates in Hawaii. The Home Gardening Kits consist of an aquaponics system, two raised garden beds, gardening tools, organic compost, volcanic cinder, and an assortment of plants for both the aquaponic and soil gardens.
Growing your own fruits, vegetables and herbs at home not only saves money, but also decreases our States’ dependence on imports, lowers the carbon footprint of families, and helps to build healthy bodies, minds, and communities.
Each custom designed organic home gardening kit has a set of pre-fabricated components that can easily be assembled on-site by a small team of volunteers. Habitat Partner Families are also providing “sweat equity” towards the installation of their gardens by providing volunteer labor in the set up.
In Hawaii, malama‘aina (respect and care for the land) is a huge part of historical and local culture. Hawaii Habitat for Humanity is excited and privileged to give these resources for our families towards this important pursuit.
If you have any questions about our project, please feel free to contact Mike Day, Green Building VISTA Associate at mike@hawaiihabitat.org.
